The Ipoh High Court today found Tronoh assemblyman Paul Yong Choo Kiong guilty of raping his maid three years ago.

High Court judge Abdul Wahab Mohamed, in handing down the decision, said the prosecution had proven its case beyond all reasonable doubt.

Yong, who sat in the dock, appeared calm when the judgment was read out at 10.10am.

He was sentenced to 13 years in jail and two strokes of the cane. However, the court allowed his application for a stay of execution pending his appeal.

He was also allowed bail of RM30,000 with one surety and told to surrender his passport to the court.

Yong, a former DAP member, was accused of raping the 23-year-old maid at his house in Meru Desa Park on July 7, 2019.

The charge was made under Section 376 (1) of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to 20 years and a possible whipping.

The defence had closed its case on March 31 after calling three witnesses: Yong, his wife Too Choon Looi, and the maid's uncle Muhammad Rusdi.
