DAP founding chairman Dr Chen Man Hin who helped establish the party in Seremban died early this morning. He was 97.

Chen, who was born in China and studied medicine at Singapore's King Edward VII Medical College, worked as a doctor in the city-state and at Hospital Seremban until 1956, after which he opened his own clinic.

He contested and won his first election as an independent in the 1965 by-election for the Rahang state seat in Negeri Sembilan.

His political career also saw him holding the parliamentary seats of Seremban Timor and Seremban.

In his description of himself on his blog, Chen said his medical practice among the community gave him the opportunity to meet people and to understand their social and political problems.

"It provided the rational and impetus for venturing into the political arena," he said.

"Thereafter my life and soul was devoted to the party."
