An unemployed waiter has gone on trial in Spain for allegedly killing his mother, cutting her up and eating her.

Alberto Sanchez Gomez was arrested in February 2019 after police went to the home of his 66-year-old mother following concerns from a friend.

The court was told of the macabre scene police found at the apartment in eastern Madrid.

Police officers said they found body parts scattered around the apartment, some in plastic containers.

Parts of the human remains were in the process of being cooked, El Mundo newspaper reports.

Gómez has told the court he does not remember dismembering or eating his mother, María Soledad Gomez.

However, he has admitted that he heard the voices of neighbours, acquaintances and celebrities telling him to kill his mother as he watched TV with her in their apartment, the Sun reported.

He is reported to have been suffering from a personality disorder as well as a drug habit prior to his arrest and Spanish media say he was known to police because of past acts of violence against his mother.

Police officials say that he was in breach of a restraining order at the time of his arrest.

The defendant, who was 26 at the time, reportedly confessed to strangling his mother and said he had fed most of her to their dog.

Prosecutors also want him to compensate an older brother with €90,000 (RM446,000) for his mother’s loss if he is found guilty of homicide and desecrating a corpse.

The trial continues.
