Police today said they are investigating PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang over a speech in which he touched on the differences between the Islamic system for pardoning convicts and that of the Pardons Board during a campaign for the Simpang Jeram by-election in Johor.

Johor police chief Kamarul Zaman Mamat said the investigation is being carried out by Bukit Aman police under the Sedition Act.

Meanwhile, the PAS president's political secretary and Bachok MP Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman, when contacted by MalaysiaNow, said Hadi was ready to cooperate with the police.

"Even prior to this, Hadi had already given his statement to Bukit Aman, including surrendering the mobile phone belonging to the administrator of his official Facebook account, who is also his press secretary, to the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to assist with the investigation.

"In this matter, Hadi places his full trust in the professionalism of the police and the MCMC in carrying out their duties and the investigation," he said.

Syahir, however, added that the police did not inform him why Hadi was called up.
