The Election Commission (EC) has set Oct 7 as polling day for the Pelangai by-election following the death of incumbent Johari Harun in a plane crash last week.

Nomination meanwhile will be held on Sept 23, and early voting on Oct 3.

Johari was killed alongside nine others in a plane crash near Bandar Elmina, Shah Alam on Aug 17.

The Pelangai by-election will be the fourth by-election after the 15th general election in November last year.

EC chairman Abdul Ghani Salleh said the electoral roll to be used covered a total of 16,456 voters consisting of 16,417 ordinary voters, 36 police officials and three overseas absentee voters.

The election is expected to cost some RM2.1 million.

A total of 312 staffers will be appointed to handle the election process, with a returning officer who will be assisted by three assistant returning officers.

Nine polling centres with 30 strams will be used on polling day, and one centre with a single stream for early voting.
