AirAsia has assured some 450,000 customers waiting for refunds from the budget airline that it will pay them back despite facing cash problems due to the grounding of its flights caused by the Covid-19 crisis.

“What we are trying to do now is to pay everyone back… and ensure that AirAsia will survive,” AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes said in a video address posted on Facebook.

The company said since January last year, some 1.5 million people have received their refunds, while 2.9 million accepted credit accounts in exchange for money.

“Every week, we are processing through 450,000 outstanding refunds. You will get yours, please be patient,” the company posted alongside Tony’s video message.

Meanwhile, Tony said sister airline AirAsia X would undergo corporate restructuring.

“AirAsia X is in deep, deep financial difficulty because it just hasn’t been able to fly anywhere. Plus it has had to deal with very unfair competition over the many years,” he added.
