People in the US will not be able to download the popular video-sharing app TikTok from Sunday.

The US commerce department has said the ban will also cover the messaging app WeChat.

“The Chinese Communist Party has demonstrated the means and motives to use these apps to threaten the national security, foreign policy, and the economy of the US,” the department said.

TikTok currently has 100 million users in the US and the White House is not happy that their data is secure in the hands of the Chinese.

US technology giant Oracle and TikTok’s Chinese owners ByteDance are negotiating to create a new company, TikTok Global, that could address Trump’s concerns about the security of its users’ data.

If they can strike a deal before Sunday, President Donald Trump could call the ban off.
