Bentong PAS deputy president Kasim Samat will represent Perikatan Nasional (PN) while Bentong Umno committee member Amizar Abu Adam will represent Barisan Nasional (BN) at the Pelangai by-election in Pahang next month.

The candidates were announced yesterday at separate events in Bentong.

Kasim contested the Pelangai state seat during the 15th general election but lost to BN's Johari Harun with a majority of 4,048 votes.

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the party had discussed the names of three candidates before agreeing on Kasim.

"We discussed who was the best, and we looked at who was closest to voters. A candidate from Pelangai, someone who lives here," he was reported as saying by Bernama during the candidate announcement at Simpang Pelangai last night.

Pahang BN chairman Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail meanwhile urged Umno members to work together and support Amizar at the upcoming election.

"There are 3,040 Umno members in Pelangai, so I hope party members will work hard, can get at least 90% of our members out to vote. Please continue to give support so that our candidate will win big," he said.

The Pelangai by-election on Oct 7 was called after Johari died in a plane crash in Shah Alam, Selangor, on Aug 17.

Nomination will be held on Sept 23 and early voting on Oct 3.
