The government-funded Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (Ikim) has stepped in to defend Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim against critics of his "Malaysia Madani" brand, calling on the public to embrace the slogan.

"Let's come together with the government leadership today to understand the true foundation and philosophy of Malaysia Madani, and come together towards achieving a plural society of Malaysia Madani that is harmonious and united," said Ikim director-general Mohamed Azam Mohamed Adil.

Since taking office late last year, Anwar has been on a nationwide blitz to promote "Malaysia Madani", seen as an attempt at unifying the various political coalitions in his government under a single brand, similar to efforts made by previous prime ministers.

Critics however say "Malaysia Madani" is more of a political battle cry, with some seeing it as an effort to woo Muslim support in the face of stiff challenge from PAS and Bersatu.

A recent move to use the term as part of the official theme for this year's Merdeka celebration also drew criticism, with a Perikatan Nasional leader suggesting that states under the coalition's control use a different theme.

Ikim, a body established in 1992 by then prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's government as a clearance house of true Islamic ideas and teachings, said the term had been in use in early Islamic civilisation, adding that it had its origins in Medina, where the first Islamic government was established by Prophet Muhammad.

"Malaysia Madani is an integrated and holistic effort to make all policies and their implementation in Malaysia more humane, constantly improving them with consultation and feedback from the people," it said.

It also quoted pro-Anwar academic Osman Bakar, listing several principles of Malaysia Madani.

"As such, the claims questioning Malaysian Madani's philosophy should be corrected and pondered upon," said Azam.
