A DAP MP today lashed out at Dr Mahathir Mohamad over reports that he had criticised the royal institution and urged the government to consider revoking the former prime minister's Tun title.

Jelutong MP RSN Rayer also warned that Mahathir and Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin could come together again following reports of reconciliation between the two.

"The two of them want to destroy the country. They want to stop Tambun (Anwar Ibrahim) from carrying out his duties and taking care of the people's welfare," Rayer told the Dewan Rakyat today.

"Please stop the attacks and insults towards the royal households.

"I request... that the police take decisive action against Mahathir if he continues to attack the royal households.

"I also urge the government to consider revoking Tun's title if he persists with these attacks. We have witnessed his Proclamation (Malay Proclamation) and he may join hands with Pagoh (Muhyiddin) who had betrayed him," he added.

The police had previously said that Mahathir was being questioned over his Malay Proclamation movement. He was also being probed for allegedly insulting the royal institution.

Mahathir, who stepped down in 2003 after leading the country for 22 years, was conferred the Darjah Kebesaran Seri Maharaja Mangku Negara which carries the title "Tun", an exclusive honour that is only reserved for 25 people at any one time.

In 2018, he made history by becoming the prime minister for the second time after leading the Pakatan Harapan coalition to end more than six decades of Barisan Nasional rule. He resigned less than two years later following internal bickerings among ruling parties.

The power vacuum was later filled by Muhyiddin, who took over just a month before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.

Mahathir had previously said that he was ready to work with Muhyiddin if they can reach a consensus on mutual goals. The latter welcomed the offer from Mahathir, saying that he was prepared to work with the former prime minister to defend religion, race and country.
