The National Security Council says there will be no further movement restrictions such as those put in place at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

National Recovery Council chairman Muhyiddin Yassin today reiterated the government’s assurance that there would be no further implementation of movement control order despite the fierce spike in Covid-19 infections due to the ultra contagious Omicron variant.

Replying to questions after a press conference, he said there would be “no turning back”.

“There is no turning back anymore,” he said. “I think the experience that we have will be enough to help us manage our situation.”

He added however that the public must always remember and comply with the SOPs set by the health ministry.

The country had been placed under a series of movement controls meant to curb the spread of Covid-19 since the onset of the pandemic in early 2020.

The restrictions saw businesses shut and employees told to work from home, with only essential services allowed to remain open.

Schools were shut and interstate travel was banned, in a move only reversed in October last year.

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said last month that the government had no plans to impose another lockdown to restrict movements and businesses.

He also said that a further easing of SOPs might be on the cards once the vaccination programme, including the administration of booster jabs, is complete, adding however that this would depend on the health ministry’s advice.
