Dr Mahathir Mohamad has regained consciousness and is in stable condition following his recent readmission to the National Heart Institute (IJN).

Utusan Malaysia quoted a source as saying that the former prime minister was also able to speak.

“Thankfully, his condition is continuing to stabilise,” the source was reported as saying.

Mahathir was readmitted to IJN earlier this week after having undergone an elective procedure on Jan 7.

Mahathir was previously admitted to IJN in December, when doctors said they were carrying out a series of tests.

Rumours and speculation had swirled following his latest admission, with many concerned over the health of the 96-year-old veteran leader.

His daughter Marina Mahathir said last night that he was stable and responding well to treatment.
