Pakatan Harapan (PH) today said former chief minister Adly Zahari will lead the coalition’s campaign in the upcoming state election.

The coalition, which earlier opposed the move to call for an election in the state, citing the lingering Covid-19 pandemic, also said it would seek assurance from the Election Commission that it could meet voters without restrictions.

Meanwhile, the top PH leaders said the coalition would not field Norhizam Hassan Baktee as its candidate, in line with a call by DAP’s Lim Guan Eng rejecting any move to name the Pengkalan Batu assemblyman.

Norhizam left DAP after the collapse of the state government in 2020.

The Melaka state assembly was dissolved on Oct 4 after Chief Minister Sulaiman Md Ali lost the support of the majority following the move by four representatives to withdraw their backing for him.

The four were former chief minister Idris Haron (Sungai Udang), Nor Azman Hassan (Pantai Kundor), Norhizam and Noor Effandi Ahmad (Telok Mas).

The state election will be held on Nov 20.
