The communications and digital ministry is collaborating with Meta Platforms Inc, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), as well as the police to curb online crimes.

Its minister Fahmi Fadzil said the move followed a rise in online fraud and gambling cases, as well as 3R issues relating to religion, royalty and race.

'Losses suffered by Malaysians from January to May 2023 via Meta platforms (Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp) have almost exceeded RM330 million.

"This is a 25% increase compared to the whole year in 2022," he said in a Facebook post yesterday after chairing a meeting with Meta, MCMC, and the police in Bukit Aman.

As a result of the meeting, he said Meta had expressed a commitment to having close cooperation with MCMC and the police to curb online crime.

"I believe that the cooperation established allows scams, online gambling and 3R issues on the Meta platform to be reduced," he said.
