Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin yesterday voiced ambitions of one day leading Umno and becoming the prime minister, adding however that he would need to prove himself in Sungai Buloh first.

Speaking at a campaign event in Taman Saujana Utama in the constituency, he said Sungai Buloh was "not the limit".

"For me, if I win here – if the people of Sungai Buloh allow me to win – Sungai Buloh is not the limit," he said.

"I will bring the people of Sungai Buloh until one day, we lead the country, God willing.

"If you support me today, one day, I want to lead Umno. One day, I want to be your prime minister, to raise up this country."

Khairy, the Rembau incumbent, was fielded in Sungai Buloh to make way for Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan to contest his seat instead.

He was previously the science, technology and innovation minister as well as the youth and sports minister.

Speaking last night, he added that his ambitions were contingent on victory in Sungai Buloh.

"I think it's time," he added. "I want to say it. But not now. Now, if we win, Ismail Sabri Yaakob will be the prime minister of Malaysia.

"I am 46, I can still wait. I am ready, but I must prove myself in Sungai Buloh first."
