PKR president Anwar Ibrahim speaks to his deputy Rafizi Ramli as the latter shakes hands with Nik Omar Nik Abdul Aziz at a press conference in Petaling Jaya today.

Nik Omar Nik Abdul Aziz, the son of a former Kelantan menteri besar, will contest the 15th general election (GE15) in Perak on a PKR ticket, party chief Anwar Ibrahim announced today.

Anwar however declined to reveal further details on whether Nik Omar, the son of former PAS leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, would be fielded in a state or federal seat.

At the last general election in 2018, Nik Omar, representing Pakatan Harapan (PH), was defeated in a three-way fight against Barisan Nasional and PAS for the state seat of Chempaka, winning just 2,418 votes.

When asked if he had left Amanah for PKR, Nik Omar remained vague.

"The important thing is that we are united in PH," he said.

"Being here is proof of our commitment to bringing about a government that is centred on justice."

Aside from Nik Omar, the names of six other candidates were presented: Zainal Azman Abu Seman, Hassan Basri Awang Mat Dahan, Nor Aishah Mydin Abdul Aziz, Saipol Yazan Yusop, Juftri Joha and Fathin Amelina Fazlie.

The six, consisting of former senior civil servants, academics, and youth, will be fielded in Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Pahang and Perlis.

According to Anwar, an official announcement of PKR's candidates will be made this Friday.

PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli said the seven candidates announced today were part of the party's initiative to field individuals with professional backgrounds instead of only politicians.

"We are following the request of voters who want new faces and professionals."
