Former MIC president Samy Vellu dies

Former MIC president S Samy Vellu died early this morning. He was 86.

Samy Vellu, who was Sungai Siput MP from September 1974 to March 2008, was the longest-serving MIC president, holding the post for 31 years. 

He was also a long-time member of the Cabinet, serving as works minister from June 1983 to June 1989, and from May 1995 to March 2008. 

He was also minister of energy, telecommunications and posts from June 1989 to May 1995, and minister of works and public amenities from September 1979 to June 1983.

When contacted by Bernama, former MIC president S Subramaniam said he was informed that Samy Vellu had died in his sleep. 

"His contribution to the nation and to the Indian community will be permanently etched in our memories," Subramaniam said in a Facebook post.
