Melaka Barisan Nasional chairman Ab Rauf Yusoh waves on nomination day for the Melaka state election on Nov 8. Rauf is representing BN in the Tanjung Bidara state seat.

Melaka Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Ab Rauf Yusoh today acknowledged that a programme for UiTM Lendu students was recently held at his family villa following news that one of them had tested positive for Covid-19.

However Rauf, who is contesting the Tanjung Bidara state seat, denied that the programme was related to politics involving BN or the Melaka polls which will be held on Nov 20.

“Yes, that villa is owned by my family, they rented it. I don’t know for what programme,” he said when contacted by MalaysiaNow.

Talk had been rife that the UiTM student contracted Covid-19 after attending a three-day, two-night programme.

A letter of invitation sighted by MalaysiaNow said the programme was organised by an NGO, Pertubuhan Sukarelawan Jalinan Nasional (Sarjana), under the auspices of BN’s candidate for the Rim state seat, Khaidhirah Abu Zahar.

Khaidhirah is director of Sarjana.

According to the letter, the aim of the programme was to “prepare potential student leaders”.

MalaysiaNow is attempting to contact Khaidhirah but has so far received no response.

According to one of her officials, her attendance at the programme cannot be confirmed for the time being.

MalaysiaNow earlier reported that a student from UiTM Lendu had tested positive for Covid-19 after attending a programme in Alor Gajah, while seven others are undergoing a second swab test.

UiTM had isolated the students who attended the programme with 40 people screened for the virus.

An investigation is underway by the Alor Gajah district health office.
