Cops question Mahathir for 'anti-democracy' activities

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad was at Bukit Aman today to facilitate an investigation in connection with the Malay Proclamation, his lawyer Rafique Rashid said.

In a video sent to MalaysiaNow, Rafique said Mahathir's statement was taken at around 11.30am at Yayasan Albukhary in Kuala Lumpur.

He added that the former Langkawi MP is being investigated under Section 124B of the Penal Code for engaging in activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy.

"I accompanied Mahathir today who was investigated and had his statement recorded by Bukit Aman because he talked about the Malay Proclamation," he said.

"Mahathir said that he is ready to be charged and will answer questions in court."

The former two-time prime minister previously said that the Malay Proclamation was intended to advocate and seek solutions to problems faced by the Malay community in the country.

It received support from several leaders in the Perikatan Nasional coalition, including PAS President Abdul Hadi Awang.

The former prime minister also claimed that the government had obstructed attempts to organise the proclamation gathering after its venues cancelled the booking of the halls several times.

Rafique meanwhile questioned the police for recording Mahathir's statement and urged the public to not be afraid if called in for investigation on the same matter by the authorities.

"Is it against the law to talk about the Malays or the Malay Proclamation?

"Let the people understand what the Malay Proclamation is," he added.

MalaysiaNow is still awaiting a response from Bukit Aman.
