The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) today said that the northeast monsoon period will begin this week, earlier than expected, and continue until March next year, as the country heads to the polls amid fears that the election will clash with the annual floods that ravaged several states last year.

In a statement, it said the monsoon season which will begin on Nov 7 would likely see four to six episodes of continous heavy rain.

"As in previous seasons, continuous heavy rain over a course of several days might result in flooding in low-lying areas and near rivers," it said.

"If continuous heavy rain occurs at the same time as a high tide event, the risk of flooding might increase."

It added that high tide events are expected from Nov 6 to 11, and 22 to 27; Dec 7 to 12, and 22 to 26; and Jan 6 to 10, and 21 to 25.

"During the northeast monsoon, strong and continuous northeasterly winds may also cause rough seas and large waves in the waters of the South China Sea," it said.

"The public is advised to prepare for the monsoon season and to remain alert to the information, advice and weather warnings issued by MetMalaysia."
