Gombak MP Mohamed Azmin Ali today expressed confidence that Perikatan Nasional (PN) would be able to win the seat at the 15th general election (GE15).

The international trade and industry minister said the voters in his constituency were capable of casting their ballots wisely, to choose the candidate best able to represent them.

He also said that the new voters, especially the youth, had benefited greatly under the administration of PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin during his tenure as prime minister.

“We will try our best to provide job opportunities for them, and I am confident in the involvement of the youth,” he said at an event in Taman Melawati in Selangor.

Azmin won the Gombak parliamentary seat on a PKR ticket at GE14, beating the other candidates from Umno and PAS.

At the time, Gombak had 141,112 registered voters, 85.4% of whom turned out to vote.

The majority — 75.8% — were Malays while Indians represented 10.77% and the Chinese, 10.67%.

Gombak has been described as a hot seat ahead of GE15, with speculation swirling that PKR president Anwar Ibrahim might choose to take on his former party member there.

When asked if he would defend his seat, Azmin said he would leave the matter to Muhyiddin, who is the Bersatu president.

He also expressed confidence in his track record as the MP for Gombak.

“I leave it to the people of Gombak, but I am confident that they have known me for a long time,” he said.

“They have seen how I handle matters when I am given big responsibilities.”

Azmin also said that PN was ready to face any eventuality at the polls.

“This is a democratic process, any party can enter an election,” he said.

“In the end, it is the people who will decide who wins. The power lies in their hands.”
