Police have arrested a man over a social media post on the prime minister's chief private secretary, who sparked controversy late last year for wearing allegedly expensive clothing and jewellery to the office.

The man, in his late 40s, was arrested at his mother's house at about 10pm last night.

He was held overnight at the police headquarters in Putrajaya and brought for a remand hearing this morning.

The investigation is said to be under Section 500 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.

The chief private secretary, Nazimah Hashim, was criticised by social media users in December last year after a photo of her wearing a blazer which netizens estimated to have cost RM4,000 – nearly RM7,000 before discount – went viral.

She also wore two necklaces allegedly priced at RM73,000 and RM266,000, and what appeared to be a Chanel brooch, said to cost RM2,730.
