UK-born football player Lee Andrew Tuck has been granted Malaysian citizenship after what he describes as "a tough road".

"Today, I can finally and officially say I am a Malaysian citizen," the Sri Pahang player said in an Instagram post yesterday, on Merdeka Day.

"I'm truly grateful to obtain Malaysia citizenship. It's been a tough road with making sacrifices in order to get here but this was an opportunity I couldn't pass on."

The 34-year-old, who played in football leagues in Thailand and Bangladesh before settling in Malaysia, was formerly with the Negeri Sembilan and Terengganu clubs.

In his Instagram post, he thanked Sri Pahang club owner Tengku Abdul Rahman Sultan Ahmad Shah, the brother of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, as well as club chairman and board of directors.

"I would also like to thank my loving family and close friends," he said, ending the post with a string of Jalur Gemilang emojis.
