Singapore yesterday reported its first Covid-19 death in a patient below 12 years of age with the passing of a young boy who was one and a half years old.

The Singapore health ministry said in a statement that the cause of death was encephalitis due to Covid-19, respiratory syncytial virus, and enterovirus infections.

In a statement on its website yesterday, the ministry said the boy had had no other medical history and was previously in good health.

It said he was taken to the KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital on the night of June 21 with a high fever and after experiencing recurrent seizures.

He was admitted to the children’s intensive care unit in critical condition on June 22, and diagnosed with severe meningoencephalitis.

The ministry extended its condolences to the boy’s family.

As of noon on June 27, Singapore had reported 5,309 new Covid-19 cases and one death.
