Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says the cooperation between Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Muhyiddin Yassin is nothing new and is aimed at defending "their ways and wealth", following a meeting of the former leaders yesterday ahead of the elections to be held in six states.

"That group will continue to conspire to defend their ways and their wealth.

"So we are responsible for saving our beloved country," Bernama quoted him as telling reporters in Kuala Lumpur today.

He also said that the alliance between Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional in facing the elections next month would not be affected by the renewed ties of Mahathir and Muhyiddin.

The former prime leaders met at Mahathir's house on July 4 to discuss an understanding on several issues, including the future of the Malays.

"In principle, we agreed to strengthen the unity of the Malays and increase support for Perikatan Nasional, especially ahead of the elections in six states," Muhyiddin said.

The six states in question are Selangor, Kedah, Terengganu, Penang, Negeri Sembilan, and Kelantan.

Voters in these states will head to the polls on Aug 12, with nomination on July 29 and early voting on Aug 8.
