The Penang government has moved to revoke Najib Razak's honorific title, following in the footsteps of Selangor which just days earlier stripped him and his wife Rosmah Mansor of their state designations.

Najib, who began serving a 12-year jail term on Aug 23, was given the Darjah Utama Pangkuan Negeri which carries the "Datuk Seri Utama" in 2009.

Penang deputy state secretary (development) Zakuan Zakaria said that in light of his conviction and sentence in the SRC International case, this title would be stripped effective Sept 15.

Najib was found guilty by the High Court on July 28, 2020 of seven counts of money laundering, criminal breach of trust and abuse of power in the misapprioriation of RM42 million from SRC International funds.

The ruling was upheld by the Court of Appeal on Dec 8, 2021 and the Federal Court on Aug 23.

The Pekan MP, who is serving his sentence at Kajang Prison, has filed a petition for pardon as well as a review of the apex court judgment which sent him to jail.
