The office of the chief registrar of the Federal Court today said it had lodged a police report over claims of a conspiracy between politicians and the chief justice following a Facebook post accusing Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat of agreeing to speed up the trial and sentencing of Najib Razak and Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Referring to the post dated April 20 on the account of one Shahir Samad-Tok Uban, it said the chief justice had never been contacted by or communicated with any politician regarding Najib or Zahid’s cases.

“Cases still pending in court should continue according to the law without any interference by the chief justice or anyone else,” it added.

It said the accusations had been made with the aim of tarnishing the judiciary’s image and causing a loss of public confidence in it.

“The claims were also aimed at subverting the administration of justice in terms of the ongoing cases against Najib and Zahid.”

Najib, the Pekan MP and former prime minister, was found guilty in 2020 of seven counts of corruption involving former 1MDB unit SRC International. He was sentenced to 12 years in jail and fined RM210 million, although he is currently appealing against both conviction and sentence at the Federal Court.

Umno president Zahid meanwhile is facing 47 charges of corruption and abuse of power involving funds from charity outfit Yayasan Akal Budi.
