Machap assemblyman Onn Hafiz Ghazi was today sworn in as the 19th menteri besar of Johor, ending days of speculation over who would be appointed following Barisan Nasional’s (BN) victory in the March 12 election.

He took his oath of office at Istana Bukit Serene before Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar.

In a Facebook post, he expressed his thanks to the sultan for consenting to his appointment to the post.

He also thanked Johor crown prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and other BN leaders including Najib Razak and Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob for their support.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Hasni Mohammad, the former menteri besar, for his sacrifices, commitment, aid and leadership in maintaining stability in Johor, as well as towards me on a personal level all this time,” he said.

“Insha Allah, I will always seek advice from him as he has far more experience than I do.”

Zahid had previously said that Hasni would be BN’s choice for menteri besar if it won the Johor state election.

But Hasni, who is Johor BN chairman, said yesterday that a young candidate should be chosen to lead.

Hasni had contested and won the Benut state seat in the March 12 election in Johor.
