Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah today urged MPs to maintain the political stability achieved after the memorandum of understanding inked between the government and the opposition last year, saying this will ensure the success of the nation’s development agenda for the benefit of the people and the country as a whole.

In his royal address at the opening of the First Meeting of the Fifth Session of the 14th Parliament today, he said he was pleased and grateful for the stability that followed the MoU on Transformation and Political Stability, signed in September last year.

“As a result of this agreement and maturity, amendments to the Federal Constitution related to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 were successfully approved by more than two-thirds of Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara members last December,” he said.

“Indeed, the event will definitely be ranked as a historic moment for Keluarga Malaysia.”

The MoU was signed on Sept 13 by Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and top Pakatan Harapan leaders Anwar Ibrahim, Mohamad Sabu, Lim Guan Eng and Wilfred Madius Tangau.

It covered MA63 on the rights of Sabah and Sarawak as well as the empowerment of the Covid-19 plan, administrative transformation, parliamentary reforms, freedom of the judiciary and the formation of a steering committee.

Sultan Abdullah today said that such “political maturity” was eagerly awaited by all.

“Moving forward, we urge all honourable members to continue maintaining this understanding and preserve the political stability that has been achieved,” he said.
