Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Muhyiddin Yassin says the coalition has succeeded in making inroads in Melaka despite losing the state election today, winning two seats and proving its mettle as a contender to Barisan Nasional (BN).

He said many of PN’s candidates had succeeded in gaining more votes than their competitors.

“This shows that PN has made inroads in Melaka,” he said at a press conference tonight.

“The winds of change are coming, but they are not yet strong enough for us to form the government.”

Muhyiddin also congratulated BN on its win, voicing hope that the coalition would be able to fulfil the pledges made during its campaign.

PN through Bersatu succeeded in winning two seats in the state legislative assembly – Bemban and Sungai Udang – maintaining the number won at the 14th general election three years ago.

Muhyiddin said his bloc would conduct an in-depth study on the results of the Melaka election to determine the cause of its loss.

“Whether it was because of the voter turnout, our machinery, or other problems – this will provide us with many lessons,” the former prime minister said.

Muhyiddin also said that PN is ready for the possibility that GE15 will be held earlier than expected.

“We are already here, and we will continue to be BN’s main contender,” he said.
