Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg today said he might contest the Gedong seat in the state election to come.

Speaking at a groundbreaking ceremony in the area today, he said he is still considering the move.

“Mohd Naroden Majais earlier announced his intention to quit,” he said, referring to the incumbent assemblyman for the seat who had offered to let Abang Johari contest it in the state election.

“It is still early because I don’t know if I will contest the Gedong seat,” he added.

He said he would give the matter further thought and inform his state constituents in Satok of any decision.

As chief minister of Sarawak, he added, he must take care of all parts of the state.

Abang Johari defended his Satok seat for the eighth time during the last state election in 2016, defeating his challenger Mohamed Salleh Shawkatali from PKR.

The Sarawak legislative assembly was dissolved effective Nov 3, paving the way for the next state election.

A date for the polls is expected to be announced after a special meeting with the Election Commission in Kuching on Nov 24.
