The much anticipated announcement of the new Cabinet line-up expected after Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s audience with the king will not take place today.

Malaysians had waited in suspense since this morning for the announcement, less than a week after Ismail was sworn into the top office.

Ismail had spent about 90 minutes at Istana Abdulaziz in Kuantan this morning to present the names of those who would comprise his Cabinet to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

It was the second audience for Ismail since he took his oath of office at Istana Negara on Aug 21.

Speculation has been swirling over whether Ismail will retain the bulk of ministers from the previous administration.

The spotlight is however on the posts of deputy prime minister and finance minister.

Ismail’s choice for the two portfolios would indicate whether he is bowing to pressure from Umno leaders aligned with Najib Razak, the former prime minister who campaigned to oust Muhyiddin Yassin in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.
