Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has been assured of support from at least 40 Barisan Nasional (BN) MPs despite calls for his resignation led by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and PKR chief Anwar Ibrahim.
Deputy Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said this following a meeting with the MPs, in the wake of a statement from Istana Negara claiming that Putrajaya had not followed the constitution in announcing the repeal of the emergency ordinances.
Ismail said the MPs during the meeting upheld the palace statement, as well as the Agong’s call for MPs to prioritise the people’s welfare.
“Barisan Nasional MPs unanimously support the government led by Muhyiddin,” he said in a statement.
BN MPs comprise those from Umno, MCA and MIC.
Earlier this week, Umno’s Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah indicated that he was revoking support for Muhyiddin when he applied to change his seating position in the Dewan Rakyat.
The decision of the BN MPs came even as Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi urged MPs from his party to revoke support for Muhyiddin, a call endorsed by former prime minister Najib Razak.
