The Malaysian Employers Federation has called for political stability amid the Covid-19 crisis.

The Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) says maintaining political stability in the country is crucial to the fight against Covid-19, warning that volatility will hamper efforts to keep the spread of the virus at bay.

In a statement, MEF president Syed Hussain Syed Husman said all parties concerned should prioritise the lives and livelihoods of the people instead of lobbying for political support.

“The country needs political stability during this pandemic, and having new leaders taking over the management of Covid-19 may not sit well as they may require more time before they act, whereas we need fast action,” he said.

Adding that MEF is an apolitical organisation, he said a government that has the business community and the people at heart is needed in order to promote a good business environment and favourable conditions to grow businesses, attract investments and create employment opportunities.

He also said that the present government was doing its best to manage issues throughout the pandemic, but reiterated MEF’s call for the reopening of the economic sector.

“It is impossible to do battle on two major fronts at the same time with the Covid-19 crisis and also the rakyat crisis that has been caused by the prolonged lockdown,” he said.

“We must urgently open up the economy with a strict focus on the affected sections of the industry so that the rakyat can earn a living.”

Noting the recommendation by the World Health Organization that governments avoid implementing lockdowns due to their devastating consequences, he urged the government to focus on “Covid-19 management”.

“Trying to do both at the same time is impossible,” he said.
