Dr Mahathir Mohamad today said he had instructed his lawyers to respond to the letter of demand sent by ex-top cop Khalid Abu Bakar, who had accused the former prime minister of defamation over his claim of a leak in the 1MDB task force attributed to Khalid who was inspector-general of police at the time.

“I’ve received the letter of demand from ex-IGP Khalid Abu Bakar,” Mahathir said in a Twitter post.

“I’ve instructed my lawyers to respond to it. I will see him in court.”

Mahathir had reportedly said that there was a delay in action against former prime minister Najib Razak, claiming Khalid had leaked information on the task force investigation in 2015.

Khalid subsequently gave Mahathir seven days to apologise for his statement which he said had defamed him.

He also demanded that Mahathir retract his statement.

He is currently seeking RM10 million from Mahathir over the former prime minister’s remarks.
