Umno today said it would not press PAS for a decision on whether the Islamist party will continue its cooperation with Umno.

Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said he was confident that PAS would prioritise its ties with Umno over Bersatu.

“It is a friendship which started earlier than 2019, when we were against Pakatan Harapan, at a time when PPBM (Bersatu) was in PH with DAP and PKR,” Ahmad said, referring to the Muafakat Nasional charter signed by Umno and PAS.

The Umno general assembly is likely to endorse the plan by its president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to cut ties with Bersatu.

Zahid today repeated his call for PAS to rethink its position in the Perikatan Nasional coalition.

PAS previously said that it would not ditch Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, while offering to play the peacemaker between Bersatu and Umno.
