New cases climb to 563, two more deaths

Active cases have crossed the 5,000 mark.

Daily Covid-19 numbers continued to climb today with 563 new infections recorded, driving total confirmed cases to 16,220.

In terms of local transmissions, which accounted for all but one, the bulk of new infections were reported in Sabah (291 or 51.7%). In Penang meanwhile, 141 cases were recorded from the remand prison cluster while 69 cases were reported in Selangor.

In Kuala Lumpur, 27 cases were recorded, followed by Negeri Sembilan (12), Kedah (10), Perak (four), Johor (two), Putrajaya (two), Labuan (two), Sarawak (one) and Melaka (one).

The one imported case recorded today was in Kuala Lumpur.

Active cases now stand at 5,039 with 98 in the ICU and 29 in need of respiratory assistance.

Two more deaths were also recorded, taking the virus toll to 159: an 85-year-old woman with a history of high blood pressure, heart problems and chronic lung disease; and a 48-year-old woman.

However, 109 patients were also discharged from hospital, taking total recoveries to 11,022 or 67.9% of all cases.

Meanwhile, six new clusters have been detected, in Kuala Lumpur (two), Sabah (one), Selangor (one), Johor (one) and Putrajaya (one).
