Presiden  Amerika Syarikat (AS) Joe Biden dan Naib Presiden Kamala Harris pada Rabu mengangkat sumpah jawatan dalam satu upacara berlangsung di bangunan Capitol yang dikawal ketat, lapor Agensi Anadolu.

Kebiasaannya acara empat tahun sekali itu dihadiri ratusan ribu rakyat, tetapi tahun ini diadakan tanpa kehadiran ramai memandangkan penularan wabak Covid-19.

Seramai 25,000 anggota pasukan Pengawal Negara turut dikerahkan mengawal keselamatan di Washington D.C.

Pada Rabu pagi bekas Presiden Donald Trump dilihat meninggalkan Rumah Putih menuju ke Florida, tidak bersama-sama menyertai upacara angkat sumpah itu.

Secara tradisi sejak 1937, bekas presiden akan turut sama menyertai upacara pelantikan rasmi.

Trump bekas presiden pertama yang tidak turut serta sejak 1879, selepas Andrew Johnson tidak menghadiri upacara penggantinya Ulysses S. Grant.
